4 Hormone Myths That Are a Little Spooky

Some hormone advice is scarier than Halloween itself

Hello Reader!

Between social media trends, supplement recommendations, and conflicting wellness advice, it's easy to fall for some pretty spooky hormone myths spread throughout the wellness influencer community.

So, in the spirit of Halloween, let's separate the tricks from the treats!

TRICK #1: You Need to Cut Out ALL Sugar to Balance Your Hormones

The truth: You can enjoy your favorite Halloween candy (in small amounts) without throwing your hormones into chaos. While consistently high added sugar intake can affect metabolic health, an occasional sweet treat isn't going to derail your hormones.

The treat: Enjoy your treats in moderation! Focus on balanced meals, adequate protein, and fiber rather than restriction. Don't forget that fruit is a great healthy alternative to candy that contains vitamins and fiber to keep your blood sugar balanced. Also, movement enhances insulin sensitivity, so get out and walk around the block one or two times after meals.

TRICK #2: Every Woman Needs a Comprehensive Hormone Panel

The truth: More testing doesn't always mean better answers. Hormone levels naturally fluctuate throughout your menstrual cycle, so testing at the wrong time (or without a clear reason) can create more confusion than clarity.

The treat: Targeted testing based on your symptoms, cycle history, and health goals is often more useful than ordering every hormone test available. Also, make sure the timing of your labs is considered. Depending on your goals, you may want to time your labs during your follicular or luteal phases.

TRICK #3: PMS Always Means You Have Estrogen Dominance

The truth: PMS is more complicated than simply having too much estrogen or too little progesterone.

The treat: Instead of chasing an ideal estrogen-to-progesterone ratio, focus on identifying what's contributing to your symptoms.

TRICK #4: Your Hormones Start Going Downhill After 30

The truth: Turning 30 doesn't mean your hormones suddenly stop working! While reproductive hormones and fertility naturally change with age, there's no magical switch that flips on your 30th birthday.

The treat: Supporting your health through nutrition, exercise, sleep, and preventative care can make a meaningful difference throughout your reproductive years and beyond.
