What's Hiding in Your Water?

Hello Reader!

When patients ask me about the healthiest low-tox swaps they can make, one of the first things I mention is their drinking water.

As someone who lives in San Diego, this is something I think about often.

Don't get me wrong. I am incredibly grateful to have access to running water whenever I turn on the faucet. But after looking into what's commonly found in municipal water supplies, drinking straight tap water just isn't something I'm personally comfortable with.

Large cities like San Diego do a great job treating water to make it safe from dangerous bacteria and pathogens, but that doesn't necessarily mean the water is free from contaminants I'd prefer not to consume on a daily basis. Things like chlorine byproducts, PFAS ("forever chemicals"), microplastics, pharmaceutical residues, pesticides, and heavy metals can still make their way into our water.

Could I drink straight from the tap? Sure.

Do I want to? Not really.

That's one of the reasons I've trusted AquaTru for so many years. I've been using their countertop reverse osmosis system since 2016, back when they were a much smaller company. Nearly a decade later, it's still sitting on my countertop and is one of the wellness products I use every single day without even thinking about it.

For me, it's one of those simple habits that helps me feel like I'm reducing my overall toxic burden without adding more work to my day, which is exactly the kind of health habit I can get behind.

One of the reasons I love reverse osmosis filtration is that it removes a much broader range of contaminants than many standard pitcher filters.

AquaTru's filtration system is designed to reduce:

✅ Lead and other heavy metals
✅ PFAS ("forever chemicals")
✅ Chlorine and chloramine
✅ Pesticides and herbicides
✅ Pharmaceutical residues
✅ VOCs and industrial chemicals
✅ Microplastics
✅ Arsenic and other inorganic contaminants

As someone who focuses on reducing toxic burden whenever possible, having confidence in the quality of my drinking water gives me peace of mind every single day.

But filtration is only part of the equation.

I also encourage patients to think about what they're drinking their water from.

Many plastic bottles can contribute to unnecessary chemical exposure, especially when they're exposed to heat or used repeatedly over time. That's why I prefer glass and stainless steel whenever possible.

Glass water bottles are my favorite for home and office use because they're easy to clean and don't absorb flavors or odors. Stainless steel bottles are excellent for travel, workouts, and long days on the go because they're durable, lightweight, and help keep drinks hot or cold for hours.

If you're looking to make a few simple upgrades to your daily routine, I've linked some of my favorite hydration essentials below:

Clean water is something we need every single day. While a good water filter may not be the most exciting wellness purchase you'll ever make, it's one of the foundational investments I continue to prioritize for myself and recommend to my patients and those closest to me.
