Why I Avoid Polyester During Summer
Hello Reader!
As the temperatures rise, I've been thinking a lot about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention in the wellness world: the fabrics we wear.
When most people think about summer health, they think about sunscreen, hydration, and avoiding heat exhaustion. Those are all important. But what you put on your body matters, too.
Over the years, I've become increasingly selective about the clothing I wear during the summer, especially when traveling. One of the biggest changes I've made? Choosing natural fibers or natural fiber blends whenever possible and avoiding polyester.
Polyester is a synthetic fabric made from petroleum-based materials. It's inexpensive, durable, and found in everything from workout clothes to dresses and travel outfits. The problem is that polyester doesn't breathe the same way natural fibers do.
During hot weather, synthetic fabrics can trap heat, moisture, and sweat against the skin. Many people notice they feel hotter, sweat more, and develop body odor faster when wearing polyester compared to breathable natural fabrics.
While everyone's body is different, I often recommend that patients who struggle with skin irritation, excessive sweating, recurrent yeast infections, or vulvar discomfort pay closer attention to the fabrics they wear.
Your skin is your largest organ. What surrounds it all day matters.
What I recommend Instead
My favorite summer fabrics are:
- Linen
- Cotton (especially organic cotton)
- Hemp
- Silk
These fibers tend to be more breathable and comfortable in warm weather. They allow better airflow and generally feel lighter against the skin.
As someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, traveling between clinics, and walking around San Diego, I've found that natural fibers simply feel better.
And honestly? They often look more elevated, too.
Don't Forget UV Protection
One of my other summer priorities is protecting my skin from excess UV exposure.
Along with mineral sunscreen, I love lightweight long-sleeve linen shirts, wide-brim hats, and breathable clothing that provides an extra layer of protection without making me feel overheated. It's one of the easiest ways to support healthy aging while still enjoying time outside.

I've rounded up some of my favorite natural-fiber clothing finds, breathable travel staples, and summer essentials here π:
Whether you're planning a summer vacation, spending more time outdoors, or simply trying to stay comfortable in the heat, paying attention to your clothing materials can make a bigger difference than you might think.
